Our morals are guided by what we know. Words are pliable and often ambiguous; they may be stretched, misused, and manipulated. As citizens, we use our knowledge of certain terms to defend our actions and our beliefs. If a language is new to us, then our expression of ourselves and understanding of the world around us may be limited and conflicted– we are forced to translate and navigate this new world with a great level of uncertainty. Have our morals changed if we do not understand the language? Are we willing to abide by a word or phrase we do not comprehend? Are we willing to let someone else defend our beliefs in a foreign language and, most likely, guided by different beliefs from our own? Are we willing to manipulate, or let someone else manipulate, our ethical code?
